We are wounded in relationships and healed in relationships. Group therapy provides a unique opportunity to experience healing in a relational context. Group therapy works because we tend to behave consistently across different areas. Your therapist will create a safe environment. This allows for an openness to examine ourselves in relationship to the group. From here, members give feedback on how certain behaviors of members impact them. This can be a positive or negative impact.
In addition to feedback, group members can give one another support and encouragement. The vulnerability in a group setting decreases isolation members felt before group started. There can be comfort in knowing others have walked in our shoes. While each problem is unique there tends to be a universality in pain and suffering. Another aspect of group is learning from the wisdom and life experience of other members.
Types of groups
There are many types of group experiences. Some groups have a focus on learning about anxiety, depression, or PTSD. These groups focus on concrete skills and tools. Other groups focus more the relationship among members. The therapist spends little time on education and skills building. At Hutt Counseling Center, we run groups with a blend of both.
